Meet Rajat: The batsman who has replaced Iyer
NEW DELHI: A back injury has forced India batsman Shreyas Iyer out of the one-day international series against New Zealand.
Madhya Pradesh‘s Rajat Patidar has been named as a replacement for Iyer in the squad, with the series scheduled to begin from Wednesday in Hyderabad, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
Having made his first-class debut back in 2015, Patidar’s stock has risen sharply thanks to performances across all formats.
Patidar plays for Madhya Pradesh in the domestic circuit and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
Patidar had earlier been part of India ODI squads, but is yet to make his international debut.
Patidar received his maiden national side call-up for the three-match ODI series against South Africa in 2022 after good performances in the IPL and domestic cricket, but is yet to play for India.
With Virat Kohli as his idol, Patidar tries to imbibe intensity in his game.
Patidar had a breakout IPL season with RCB last year, which saw him score 333 runs in eight matches at an average of 55.50 with a century and two fifties.

Patidar’s blistering 54-ball 112 for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL eliminator against Lucknow SuperGiants followed by an innings of 58 in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals made many take notice of his splendid timing and big match temperament.
Subsequently, Patidar switched to the red-ball format for Madhya Pradesh with scores of 85 and 79 in the Ranji Trophy knockouts against Punjab and Bengal respectively.
Patidar followed those up with a match-winning ton in the Ranji Trophy final for Madhya Pradesh and ended the season with 658 runs, second overall in the batting charts.
Patidar also impressed on his India-A debut, scoring 319 runs in four innings at an average of 106.33, including a century on his debut against New Zealand A.
In the opening one-dayer for India ‘A’ against the Kiwis, Patidar top-scored with an unbeaten 41-ball 45.
