MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) last week gave permission to the CM Eknath Shinde faction for holding its Dussehra rally in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), and rejected the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena’s application for another plot in the BKC on the grounds that the plot has already been booked for another event.
With the MMRDA’s go-ahead to the Shinde faction, and refusal to the Uddhav camp’s application, the Shinde faction now has a place to hold its Dussehra rally, but the Uddhav camp is yet to get any for its annual Dussehra rally.
The BMC is also yet to decide on the applications from both the factions for holding a rally at Dadar’s Shivaji Park.
While rebel Sena MP Rahul Shewale had applied for permission for the Shinde faction’s rally at BKC, the Shiv Sena application was given by MP Arvind Sawant. “We have given permission to the Shinde faction to apply, and they have also paid the rent. Shiv Sena’s application was not accepted since the plot that they had asked for was already booked by another company. Both the factions had applied for different plots within the MMRDA grounds in BKC,” said a senior MMRDA official.
Meanwhile, the BMC has sought legal opinion on the two applications received from two factions for holding their Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park.
Senior civic officials said that a factual report from the BMC’s G-North Ward, under which Shivaji Park falls, was sought to examine how permissions for previous Dussehra rallies were given. A senior civic official said an opinion on which of the two Sena factions should get permission for the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park is expected this week.
Sawant said just like the MMRDA had used a first-come, first-served formula for Viking permission to the Shinde faction at BKC, same formula must be used by the BMC for giving permission to Sena at Shivaji Park.
“We don’t have any faction, we are Shiv Sena. An application was made on behalf of the Bharatiya Kamgar Sena to get permission for the BKC grounds. Now I have come to know that MMRDA has given permission to the Shinde faction. Since they filed the application first, they got the permission first, this criteria has been set by the MMRDA. If you apply the same criteria, we should get permission to hold a Dussehra gathering at Shivaji Park. We had filed an application to hold the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park first. So only we should be allowed… if we are denied permission there, we will take the next decision. But surely we will get permission for Shivaji Park,” Sawant said.
