‘SKY Takes Guard’: Suryakumar Yadav embraces leadership role

NEW DELHI: Team India’s new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed his enthusiasm for leadership ahead of his first series as captain against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar, who took over from retired skipper Rohit Sharma, has always enjoyed being a leader and has gathered insights from various captains over his career.
Suryakumar remains optimistic and ready to take on the challenge. His first challenge will be a three-match T20I series against hosts Sri Lanka, starting on Saturday. Suryakumar was chosen for the role over Hardik Pandya.
Reflecting on his new role, Suryakumar said, “I have always enjoyed being a leader on the field even though I am not a captain. I have always learnt a lot of things from different captains. It’s a good feeling, and a great responsibility also.” Suryakumar was seen saying this in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
He emphasized the importance of humility and balance in leadership. He stated, “I think the most important thing I have learnt from this sport is how humble you are, after achieving or even when you are not doing well. That’s one thing I have learnt – when you do something on the ground, you have to leave it on the ground. Then, when you go off the field, that’s it.”

Suryakumar further elaborated on his perspective about cricket and life.
“This is not your life; it’s just part of your life. So, you can’t be – when you are doing well you stay on top and when you are not doing well, you are underground. That’s one thing which I feel you shouldn’t do as a sportsman, not only as a cricketer. That’s one thing I have learnt. That’s what helped me create balance in my life. And if you are a good person, everything happens good,” he said.
As he steps into this new role, Suryakumar aims to bring his philosophy of humility and balance to the team, hoping it will guide India to continued success in T20 cricket.
