This day that year: Sachin scored his maiden international ton
NEW DELHI: The great Sachin Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 international hundreds on August 14, 1990 when he saved the second Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Tendulkar was just 17 years old at the time, and this innings marked the beginning of what would become one of the most illustrious careers in cricket history.
India were facing a challenging situation in the match, needing to bat out the final day to avoid defeat and Tendulkar’s unbeaten 119 played a crucial role in securing a draw for India.
Tendulkar’s composure, technique, and maturity at such a young age were widely praised, and this century was the first of his 51 Test centuries.
The Indian cricket board (BCCI) posted a message on their official X handle paying a tribute to the legendary batsman.
BCCI posted: “#OnThisDay in 1990, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar scored his maiden international 100 against England at Old Trafford. He hit that magnificent knock at the age of 17. #TeamIndia”
Tendulkar had made his international debut for India at the age of 16, in a Test match against Pakistan on November 15, 1989. He made his ODI debut on December 18, 1989, also against Pakistan.
Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs in international cricket, with over 34,000 runs across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is and is the only player to have scored 100 international centuries-51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs.
Tendulkar was the first player to score a double century in a One Day International, achieving this feat against South Africa on February 24, 2010 and was a key member of the Indian team that won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. This victory was particularly significant as it fulfilled his long-standing dream of winning the World Cup for India.
Tendulkar retired from international cricket on November 16, 2013, after playing his 200th Test match, which was held at his home ground, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Tendulkar’s impact on cricket extends beyond his records. He is celebrated for his humility, sportsmanship, and the inspiration he provided to countless cricketers around the world. His technique, consistency, and adaptability made him a role model for aspiring cricketers.
