A total of 1,861 “vulnerable spots” for crimes against women have been identified by authorities in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government is now remedying the situation at these locations tagged by a survey carried out under the Safe City project.

Of the total spots listed, those identified in UP’s capital Lucknow include areas near Navyug Degree College, Hussainabad in the Old City, and the surroundings of the Isabella Thoburn (IT) College.

“A survey was carried out under the Safe City project. The vulnerable points under the survey have been shortlisted on the basis of crimes reported from the areas in the past,” said an official involved in the exercise.

As part of several initiatives for the safety of women by the Government of India, the Safe City project has been approved by the ministry of home affairs, which is centrally sponsored under the Nirbhaya Fund. The project involves the identification of hotspots for crimes against women and the deployment of various components including infrastructure, technology adoption, and capacity building in the community through awareness programmes that will enable safety for women.

“The Safe City project further aims to prevent and curb all forms of crimes against women and girl children in public places by providing safer urban infrastructure and efficient access to law enforcement agencies. The Empowered Committee under Nirbhaya Fund has approved Safe City projects in 8 selected cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow),” an official with the UP government.

The Safe City project was launched in November 2023. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said in a statement that UP will perhaps be the first state in the country to have 18 safe cities, thus providing an environment conducive to the safety of the people. The UP government had also issued guidelines regarding the safety of girls in private coaching institutes, prohibiting late evening classes.

Also, the CCTV cameras are being installed at all such locations.

“Around 26,568 CCTVs are being installed at the vulnerable points that include recognised government schools, aided schools, and unaided schools. Also, 5,505 cameras are being installed at the higher educational institutions including 21 state degree/PG colleges, 85 aided degree/PG colleges, 49 unaided degree/PG colleges, and 7 state universities,” the official added.
