In emoji-packed post, PM Modi slams ‘north vs south’ debate after polls
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took a swipe at opposition parties and their sympathisers for drawing a “north vs south” binary after the BJP‘s victory in Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh, and for deriding the voters in the three states while celebrating the Congress‘s win in Telangana.
The PM was responding to a post on X, captioned ‘Meltdown-e-Azam’, that catalogued the disparaging references on social media handles by leaders in opposition parties and their supporters. The post also mentioned the “excuses” being made by the “ecosystem” for the defeats.
“May they be happy with their arrogance, lies, pessimism and ignorance. But … beware of their divisive agenda. An old habit of 70 years can’t go away so easily. Also, such is the wisdom of the people that they have to be prepared for many more meltdowns ahead,” the PM posted.
Modi’s aggressive response, punctuated by emojis, appeared to be out of line with his posts on X and became the subject of intense conversation in political circles.
Be prepared for many more meltdowns: PM signal to opposition
“May they be happy with their arrogance, lies, pessimism and ignorance. But… beware of their divisive agenda. An old habit of 70 years can’t go away so easily. Also, such is the wisdom of the people that they have to be prepared for many more meltdowns ahead,” the PM posted.
Sources, however, said the PM was upset with the attempt to draw the “north-south” divide, purely for partisan considerations since Sunday afternoon and decided to break his silence. “It needed to be said and he said it forcefully. A technically sound batsman resorting to a slog sweep to hit the ball for a six,” said a party functionary.
He also said it reflects the party’s approach on social media which, after a long period of restraint, was beginning to shift to aggressive gear. “This post of the PM is not out of character. The aggression signals the party’s intent to take on ‘lies and innuendos’ being pushed by Congress and the collaborators. Our campaign and reels have been aggressive in tone and tenor. They are going down well . Many of our Instagram reels have generated 1.5 million views and more,” he added.
